How to plan this surgery?
During the first consultation a medical history is
elaborated that includes an examination of the breasts to analyze the possible
causes of gynecomastia. It has to be confirmed if this has arisen due to some
medication with estrogens, the use of anabolic steroids or a liver disorder,
among others.
Sometimes you can order a mammogram. Once we know the amount
of fat and glandular tissue of the breast, the appropriate surgical technique
is chosen.
Preparation
In this phase we offer specific instructions for the
preparation, such as the time of fasting and what attitude to follow regarding
the medication that is being taken or that should be taken.
It is necessary to stop smoking at least two weeks before
the intervention and follow the indications that our experts tell you.
Types of anesthesia
The correction of gynecomastia in men is usually done under
general anesthesia, or in some cases with local anesthesia and sedation. It
depends on the type of interventions that have to be carried out.
The intervention
The techniques of breast surgery that are used for a
correction of gynecomastia are diverse. Each of them will be defined by
assessing aspects such as the state of the breasts and the objective that we
seek.
The procedure to correct a gynecomastia varies depending on
the type that is and the affected tissue. If it is a gynecomastia with
glandular excess, this one will have to be removed by means of a scalpel,
whereas if it is a gynecomastia where the fat predominates, it is eliminated by
a liposuction.
Normally, an incision is made in an inconspicuous area
(flange of the areola), and through it the excess of glandular tissue, fat and
excess skin are extracted.
In the case of liposuction a hollow cannula attached to a
vacuum pump is used, and with it the fat is broken and aspirated.
Where is it done?
At the Dr. E. Lalinde Institute, we perform aesthetic
surgery operations at the Nisa Pardo de Aravaca Hospital. If it is a simple
operation you will only have to spend a few hours in the hospital and return in
the same day. At other times, it will be necessary to spend the night in the
center.
Postoperative gynecomastia
Regardless of the procedure chosen to solve a gynecomastia,
the most common is to suffer some discomfort.
The area will be swollen for a while, but the swelling can
be reduced with an elastic garment. This will disappear with time, although it
may take about three months or more until the result is visible.
Normal activity can be regained two or three days after
surgery. And the sutures will be removed after two weeks.
Definitive results
After a gynecomastia surgery, the patient presents a more
manly chest contour. The results are significant and forever. If realistic
expectations have been established, you will feel very satisfied with your new
look.
What causes a gynecomastia in men?
The causes of gynecomastia in men are diverse. It may be due
to a hormonal disorder during adolescence, but it is also possible that it
occurs in old age due to an increase in estrogen and a decrease in
testosterone.
Disorders such as obesity, suffering from thyroid or some
chronic liver disease can cause gynecomastia. Inadequate nutrition and the
intake of anabolics also cause it.
Is this surgery complicated?
The treatment of gynecomastia depends on each patient, but
it is usually a simple intervention. It usually lasts about an hour and a half
or two hours.
If everything develops normally, it will not be necessary to
spend the night in the hospital.
Every operation carries risks, although whenever we put
ourselves in the hands of a professional plastic surgeon we will be safe and
minimize risks.
When can I go back to work or do physical activity?
Normal activity can be regained after two or three days
after surgery. While resuming work may take a little longer, about two weeks.
As for the sports activity will have to be kept on the
sidelines for longer. It is advisable to wait about six weeks.
Are the results permanent?
Yes. The results of a gynecomastia are permanent. It will
take a few months to appreciate our final appearance, but when the recovery
period passes we will feel very comfortable with our new image.
Patients who undergo gynecomastia see how they recover a
more masculine breast, and recover the confidence and emotional stability that
is sometimes altered by this problem.
